History & Justice Come to Life

St. Mary’s 5th grade students recently stepped into the shoes of attorneys, witnesses, and jurors during an unforgettable mock trial experience at the Jackson County Justice Building.
Both classes participated in unique and engaging trials, gaining hands-on insight into the judicial system while sharpening their critical thinking and collaboration skills.

Mrs. Kochlacs’ Class tackled a modern criminal Hit and Run case, where students worked in teams to analyze evidence, craft case strategies, and present their arguments in a real courtroom setting.

From opening statements to closing arguments, students took on the roles of attorneys and witnesses, experiencing firsthand the challenges of direct and cross-examinations. The opportunity to engage in a real trial setting made the judicial process come to life in a way that textbooks never could.

Meanwhile, Ms. Eiler’s Class took a step back in time, reenacting the historic trial of British Soldier Captain Thomas Preston following the Boston Massacre. As part of their history curriculum, students researched actual witness testimonies and adapted them into a Reader’s Theatre-style Mock Trial play. Performing in the Justice Building, the class immersed themselves in 18th-century courtroom drama, with one student, Jacob Rowan, taking on the role of the judge. The experience deepened their understanding of the historical event, leaving them with a wealth of knowledge about the Boston Massacre and the early American legal system.
